Word Start-up Problems.
A lot of format settings global macros and other stuff are stored in normal.dot - the global
template. There is also a Startup folder, which holds add-ins and macros that start
automatically when Word is launched. If Word is not starting properly or is crashing or
freezing as soon as you start it, it is probably either the global template corrupt, or
something is loading automatically in your Word Start-up folder.
A good trick is to go to the "Start" button and click on "Run…" In the "Open" box,
type <winword.exe /a> (Leaving out the angle brackets – Note that there is a
space before the slash).
One way to get yourself a new and uncorrupted template is to close Word and search your
computer for normal.dot and then rename or delete it. When you start Word again, it will
look for the normal.dot and when it can't find it, it will create a brand new one. You will
then have to check through all of your default settings again.
Many viruses make this file the target of their attack. You may want to consider making the
normal.dot template read-only once you are satisfied with your default settings.
Word fails to print or crashes, or formatting problems:
Document, paragraph formatting is stored in the paragraph marker at the end of paragraphs.
Paragraph formatting that relates to the entire document is stored in the final paragraph
marker at the end of the document.
If you gradually work through these markers can often solve your problem.
